The working people of Bethlehem
I wonder what Bethlehem and the world
were doing that day
when God stepped down from heaven
and in a manger lay
before they knew
they would be pardoned of all sin
before they knew
a babe called Jesus
would make them all new again
was the candlemaker crying
left hopeless in despair
was the woodcutter fretting
life in shambles contemplating fear
my mind wonders if the peasant girl
felt useless
in a world that gives her no more worth
than a bearded lady at the fair
did the working man lie in agony
before the beatitudes were ever sung
or maybe the man in prison
had a ray of hope before he was hung
you see God stepped down to Bethlehem
to give them hope that day
in a manger a babe lie wrapped in linen
and all were given hope
yesterday tommorow and today
